The competition project for the design and architecture of the Belgrade metro stations presents a specific interpretation of contemporary materials and technologies through continuous, cultural and colloquial Belgrade symbols.
The morphology and visual idea of the underground parts of the metro stations are adapted to both the existing urban modernity and the future life of the city. An original dialogue between historical and contemporary aesthetics and technologies was the most important goal of this competition.The entrance facilities of the metro stations were designed by placing simplified elements (pyramids, cones), present in the urban fabric of Belgrade as centers. They were designed so that they simultaneously serve as the main vertical structural block (in the form of all types of installations). The roof planes were designed with a glossy envelope. Glass beams and planes were used as a secondary structure and part of the facade treatment. In this way, a harmonious integration of the main building into the urban fabric was achieved with an emphasis on a recognizable and high-quality urban ambience. The composition of the entrance areas of the Belgrade metro Line 1 was designed primarily to create a clear visual narrative between the station and its surroundings through a special emphasis on clear geometric continuity of the urban whole.
The minimalist decor of the designed stations is treated through the use of color that serves as a co-specific design at the level of localization and functional coding. The artificial terrazzo floors, in addition to their practicality in terms of durability and use, also suggest the depth of the vertical descent through the gradation of colors of its granules. The station equipment, railings, handrails, elevators, info boards (...) also follow this system. Integral to this treatment of materials, the design provides for full artificial lighting and natural light along the entire span of the pedestrian path.
